The Blue Flag Ecological Program was created in response to the imminent
dangers of beach pollution, its repercussions on public health and the tourism
industry. It has reached its twelfth year of operations, with a marked increase
that began in 2002.
Besides being a program that has managed to coordinate efforts
between those institutions involved, it also allows citizen participation. In
order to participate, the Pro BAE committee standards must be adhered to within the participating communities and local schools, since these institutions
implement the program’s lines of action which the award’s granting depends
We would like to share with you an open letter that long time "Zancudo-ite" and advocate of this program Duncan Ellis has sent:
Zancudo Beach "Bandera Azul" Initiative
I am happy to report that the effort to stop beach dumping, that is, people putting their yard rakings and cuttings on the beach as a way of disposal, is
a big success.
I just love Zancudo and its wonderful beach, great location on the Gulfo Dulce, tranquillo little town and friendly local people. As a keen surfer and beach lover, I feel very lucky to have enjoyed my time there. This is a very special
and unique place, one of the nicest beaches that I have found. It is very much
worth the effort to promote the care of this beach.
The dumping of the green waste on the beach by property owners over many years was very ugly and of course causing a great deal of damage to
the environment. I am very pleased to report that the work in stopping the
dumping and raising awareness of this problem has been
successful. The beach is much cleaner now, as is the water quality,
and I am sure that everyone will enjoy more their beach time.
As part of this effort, I began working with Don Leo, the chief of the town water department, Aquaductos y Acantariados. He is spearheading a push to improve the town and thereby acquire the "Bandera Azul". The Bandera Azul is the equivalent of a tidy town award. This will help promote the town.
If anyone would like to help Zancudo Beach achieve this goal, please ask Leo
what you can do to help!
And if you care about the beach, you can also help by spreading the word to your neighbors and please report any new beach dumping that you see to the police. They have been a big help.
Please share! Pura Vida a Todos,
It is through the efforts of people like Duncan and yourselves that we can have a positive impact on this one of a kind place. The "beach clean-ups" organized by Karla Castillo Espinoza from the Sol y Mar have had a wonderful result and were simply done because of her passion to keep Playa Zancudo a beautiful, clean and healthy place to raise her children.
Don't forget that the reason we live and vacation here, and love it so much, is because of it's grandeur and the "lack" of environmental carnage that is all too prevalent in much of the world today !!
Playa Zancudo IS a tropical beach paradise ... help us keep it that way ;)
Pura Vida !!!
